Defensive Action

A defensive action is the umbrella event covering tackles, interceptions, challenges and some recoveries, with the exact membership determined by the provider's taxonomy.

defensive action = tackle + interception + challenge + recovery (per taxonomy)

What it means

The category is a union of overlapping events, so its boundaries are the most contested part of football's event vocabulary.

Why it matters

It is the denominator of the pressing metrics, since PPDA and its relatives divide opponent passes by defensive actions inside a zone.

Where it is used

Pressing analysis, defensive profiling and every ratio metric that needs a defensive denominator.

Where it misleads

Raw counts grow mechanically with time spent defending, so they must be possession-adjusted. Similarly, the union of overlapping event types means two providers can differ substantially in what they count.

Key points

  • Raw counts must be adjusted for possession.
  • The event boundaries are the most contested in the taxonomy.
  • It is the denominator of PPDA, so its definition propagates.
  • Report the rate per opponent possession.
  • The zone restriction changes the count entirely.
  • Never mix two providers inside one defensive table.

A term is only as useful as the definition attached to it, and the definition has to travel with every figure quoted from it.
