xG Buildup
Buildup credit distributes the value of a shot across every player who touched the ball in the possession sequence that produced it, excluding the shot and the final pass so they are not double-counted.
What it means
It gives a measure of contribution to attacking moves that persists across a whole possession rather than only in the two actions before the shot.
Why it matters
Defenders and deep midfielders who begin attacking moves receive a value that no other metric assigns them, which is why it is the standard tool for assessing ball-playing defenders.
Where it is used
Defensive and midfield profiling, and the analysis of how a side starts its attacks.
Where it misleads
It rewards participation in high-value possessions, so a player in a strong attacking side accumulates value whether or not his own contribution was significant. The sequence boundary is arbitrary, and it says nothing about the quality of individual actions.
Key points
- It measures participation in valuable possessions, not individual quality.
- Sequence boundaries are arbitrary and must be stated.
- Players in strong attacks accumulate value automatically.
- The shot and the assist are excluded to avoid double counting.
- Compare it with progression metrics to see individual contribution.
- It is a season-level measure, not a match-level one.
Read the value, then read the trap: the failure mode is the part of the entry that stays true no matter how the number is used.
