Zone 14

Zone 14 is the informal name for the central zone just outside the penalty area, a position from which passes into the box and shots are both possible.

zone 14 = central corridor, immediately outside the penalty area

What it means

The zone matters because a player receiving there faces the goal with passing options in three directions, which makes it the most productive position for creating chances.

Why it matters

It is the target of a great deal of tactical design, since occupying the zone forces a defence to choose between conceding shots and conceding passes into the box.

Where it is used

Attacking shape analysis, and the description of where a side's creative players receive the ball.

Where it misleads

The boundary is informal and no provider publishes a standard definition, so counts of actions in the zone are not comparable between providers. The name itself is a convention rather than a measurement.

Key points

  • The boundary is informal and non-standard.
  • Counts of activity in the zone are not comparable between providers.
  • It describes a position, not an action.
  • It is best used qualitatively in tactical description.
  • Touch counts and pass counts in the zone measure different things.
  • It is a useful label and not a metric.

Report the definition, the sample and the date beside the figure, and the figure will survive being quoted by somebody else.
